How this is worked out
- Emoluments (E) = last basic pay + DA.
- Retirement gratuity = 1/4 of E for every completed six months of service, up to 16.5 × E. It needs at least 5 years of qualifying service. A part of 3 months or more counts as a full six months.
- Death gratuity: 2 × E with under 1 year of service; 6 × E for 1 to 5 years; 12 × E for 5 to 11 years; 20 × E for 11 to 20 years; and half of E for every six months with 20 years or more, up to 33 × E.
- The gratuity ceiling is ₹25 lakh from 1 January 2024 (raised from ₹20 lakh when DA reached 50%).
- Leave encashment = (basic pay + DA) ÷ 30 × days of earned leave, up to 300 days.
- For Central Government employees both amounts are fully exempt from income tax (sections 10(10) and 10(10AA)).
