Frequently asked questions

Short answers about the 8th Pay Commission, DA, HRA, arrears, and how this calculator works.

8th Pay Commission

When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented?

The 8th Pay Commission was announced in January 2025 and given about 18 months to submit its report, so the report is expected in 2027. Its recommendations are widely expected to count from 1 January 2026, with arrears for the months before the new pay is actually paid. No date is final until the Government issues orders. Read the full guide.

What will the fitment factor be?

It has not been announced. Figures such as 1.92, 2.28 and 2.86 are widely discussed; the 7th Pay Commission used 2.57. See what each would mean for your pay.

How much will my salary increase?

It depends on the fitment factor and on DA at the changeover. Because DA resets to 0%, compare your new basic pay with your current basic pay plus DA. With DA at 60%, a fitment factor of 2.28 is a real increase of about 42% on basic pay and DA. Choose your level and basic pay in the 8th Pay calculator to see your own figures.

Will DA become zero?

Yes, normally. The DA earned so far is built into the new basic pay, and DA restarts at 0% before rising again every January and July. See the DA history.

Will I get arrears?

If the 8th CPC counts from 1 January 2026 but is paid later, you should receive the difference for the months in between. Under the 7th CPC, arrears were paid on basic pay and DA; allowances were revised later without arrears. How arrears and their tax work.

Do pensioners benefit from the 8th Pay Commission?

Pay commissions also revise pensions. Pensioners receive Dearness Relief at the same rate as DA, and pension revision usually follows the new pay structure. This calculator currently covers serving employees’ pay.

DA, HRA and tax

What is the current DA rate?

60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026. The next revision takes effect from 1 July 2026 and is usually announced a few months later.

What are the current HRA rates?

30% of basic pay in X class cities, 20% in Y class and 10% in Z class, with minimums of ₹5,400, ₹3,600 and ₹1,800 a month. Check your city’s class.

Is HRA calculated on basic pay plus DA?

No. HRA is a percentage of basic pay only. DA affects HRA only by deciding which rate applies (24/16/8%, 27/18/9% or 30/20/10%).

Which tax regime is better for me?

It depends on your deductions. The new regime has lower rates and no tax up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income after the rebate, but few deductions. The old regime allows HRA exemption, 80C, 80D and home loan interest. The calculator’s tax breakdown compares both and tells you which saves more.
